Wireless Access at VCC

The VCC Wireless network is available at both campuses, 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Any student or employee can use the wireless for free. Visitors to VCC can request a guest login from the Information Desk in the Library.

Connecting

Select VCC-Public as your wireless network. When you open a browser, you will be asked to log in. There is a limit to the number of users than can access the wireless system at one time. If the maximum number of users has been reached, you may have to wait a little while for someone to disconnect before you can login.

Printing and Shared Class/Network Folders

Printing is not available from the wireless network. There are computers in the Library and the Learning Centre that are connected to printers. Shared class folders and network folders are also not accessible.

Troubleshooting

  • Come into the Library if you can't get your laptop to work with the wireless network. We can help check for the most common problems (i.e. is your password working?).
  • Make sure your wireless network adaptor card supports wireless standard of 802.11g or above. Most computers from the last 2 or 3 years will meet this standard.
  • The strength of the wireless signal may be weak if you have an older laptop, during busy periods of the day (10 a.m.to 2 p.m.), or if there is something blocking the signal such as book shelves, walls, or other physical barriers. Move to a more open area if your connection seems slow.
  • Wireless access is strongest in these areas:
» At the Broadway campus: Registration and Welcome Centre (4th floor), Library, Learning Centre, and Cafeteria.
» At the Downtown campus: Atrium (and the coffee shop), Library, Learning Centre, and Cafeteria.
  • Unfortunately, we can't help with more than that. If you can't get connected to the wireless, check the online manual for your type of laptop or bring it in to a computer shop.

Responsible Use

By accessing the wireless network, users agree to the Appropriate and Responsible Use of Education and Information Technology Policy (B.5.2). Please review the policy before using the service.
